Percussion is useful to define the right and left borders of the heart, the technique is considered in more detail with the respiratory system.

To define the right heart border, start percussion in the right midclavicular line, at the level of the fourth costal cartilage, and percuss horizontally towards and across the sternal border (figure 49a–c).

An indication of the position of the apex of the heart is obtained from palpation. To define the left border, start percussion lateral to this point, or in the midaxillary line, and percuss medially along the line of the fifth rib (figure 50a–c).
